Adopt-a-Family Program
2024 is open!

Last year, with the amazing support of our donors we were able to provide holiday gifts to over 300 families. As our holiday program has significantly grown, the human cost has become more than we can manage. Due to limited staffing and overwhelming administrative needs for the agency, we have decided to run a very limited program this year. We hope to be back to normal next year.
We are still in need of your generous support, and the families participating in the Adopt a Family Program for the 2024 season are looking forward to providing their families with basic needs to get them through the holiday season. Donors are encouraged to adopt one family and provide that family with a robust adoption. We are hoping each family can be provided with overwhelming support during this very challenging time.
If you would like to support our families outside of adoption, we are in need of donations. Families can always benefit from gift cards to places such as grocery stores, gas stations, and popular retailers such as Walmart, Target, and Amazon. Visa gift cards are also appreciated so families can use them to help pay for essentials at their local grocery stores and other shops. Please explore the Google Sheet Wishlist if you would like to know more about the types of items to donate to our families. [insert link to google sheet Wishlist here]

If you would like to purchase gift cards and other items to donate to our families, please sign up on our AAF website for a "Donation Only" drop-off. You can choose a time and day from our available options to schedule a drop-off. Please contact aaf@brighter-beginnings.org if you have any questions.

We send a heartfelt THANK YOU to all our amazing donors who have supported Brighter Beginnings over the years and have made our Adopt a Family program a success. We look forward to meeting you and connecting with you for the 2024 Adopt a Family season.

How It Works

Through this ‘adoption’ process, low-income families are matched with a donor who purchases gifts and seasonal necessities for the family. The donor drops the gifts off at one of our centers in Alameda or Contra Costa County and we distribute the gifts to the adopted family. Last year approximately 275 families and nearly 1,000 family members had their holiday wishes fulfilled. Here’s what you’ll need to do to participate:

  1. Sign Up - all you need is an email address.

  2. Once the program opens for the season, choose a drop location from your accout page.

  3. Browse through the families available for adoption.

  4. Click the 'Adopt this Family' button once you find the family you would like to adopt.

  5. Complete the contact information form to finalize the adoption.

  6. Click 'Adopt' to receive a confirmation email.

  7. Purchase gifts.

  8. Drop your gifts off at your chosen drop location on your scheduled date.

About our Gift Drive

Years ago, we realized that many of our client families were struggling during the holiday season. To address this need, we launched our Adopt-A-Family program, inviting community members and local companies to ‘adopt’ one or more families and purchase ‘gifts from the heart.’ How it works – Through this ‘adoption’ process, low-income families are matched with a donor who purchases gift cards and drops them off at one of our centers in Alameda or Contra Costa County. Last year approximately 308 families and nearly 1,000 family members had their holiday wishes fulfilled thanks to our generous donors.

About Brighter Beginnings

Brighter Beginnings has served the needs of families in low-resource communities in the East Bay since 1984. Today, we operate family resource centers and clinics in Oakland, Richmond, and Antioch and our programs help families cope with the personal, familial, and economic factors impacting their health. Last year we served over 4,700 clients across Alameda and Contra Costa Counties in the areas of family healthcare, early childhood development, teen family support, and community strengthening.
