Adopt-a-Family Program 2021

Thank you for your interest in our Adopt a Family program! As you might imagine, 2020 has been a particularly challenging time for the Brighter Beginnings’ families. While the need is especially great this year, it is important for us to protect the health and safety of our donors, staff, and clients. With this in mind, to minimize the health and safety risks, instead of shopping, wrapping, and delivering gifts, we are asking donors who would like to adopt a family to make their donation in the form of gift cards. Our adoption process is much the same as it has been in previous years: choose one of our locations, review our family profiles, make your choice, and press the adopt key. Then shop for the gift cards and drop them off at our location on December 7th (Antioch), 9th (Richmond/ Oakland), or 12th (All Locations). (Please remember to wear a mask and maintain physical space.) In addition to our families, many of our programs need year-round support. If you are interested in helping with those needs, please email jshallat@brighter-beginnings.org. We thank you for your support and participation in Brighter Beginnings programs and clients.

How It Works

Through this ‘adoption’ process, low-income families are matched with a donor who purchases gift cards to provide seasonal gifts and necessities for the family. The donor drops the gift cards off at one of our centers in Alameda or Contra Costa County and we distribute the gift cards to the adopted family. Last year approximately 275 families and nearly 1,000 family members had their holiday wishes fulfilled. Here’s what you’ll need to do to participate:

  1. Sign Up - all you need is an email address.

  2. Once the program opens for the season, choose a drop location from your accout page.

  3. Browse through the families available for adoption.

  4. Click the 'Adopt this Family' button once you find the family you would like to adopt.

  5. Complete the contact information form to finalize the adoption.

  6. Click 'Adopt' to receive a confirmation email.

  7. Purchase gift cards.

  8. Drop your gift cards off at your chosen drop location on your scheduled date.

About our Gift Drive

Years ago, we realized that many of our client families were struggling during the holiday season. To address this need, we launched our Adopt-A-Family program, inviting community members and local companies to ‘adopt’ one or more families and purchase ‘gifts from the heart.’ How it works – Through this ‘adoption’ process, low-income families are matched with a donor who purchases gift cards and drops them off at one of our centers in Alameda or Contra Costa County. Last year approximately 275 families and nearly 1,000 family members had their holiday wishes fulfilled thanks to our generous donors.

About Brighter Beginnings

Brighter Beginnings has served the needs of families in low-resource communities in the East Bay since 1984. Today, we operate family resource centers and clinics in Oakland, Richmond, and Antioch and our programs help families cope with the personal, familial, and economic factors impacting their health. Last year we served over 4,700 clients across Alameda and Contra Costa Counties in the areas of family healthcare, early childhood development, teen family support, and community strengthening.
